Statement of No Loss (ACORD 37) and No Known Loss Letters
A statement of no loss is the insured's signed certification that they know of no losses, accidents or circumstances that could lead to a claim during a stated period. The ACORD version is the ACORD 37 "Statement of No Loss" (edition 2008/01), and carriers most often ask for one before reinstating a policy that was cancelled.
ACORD 37 at a glance
| Form number | ACORD 37 |
| Title | Statement of No Loss |
| Current edition | 2008/01 |
| What it certifies | The insured knows of no losses, accidents or circumstances that could give rise to a claim under the policy shown |
| Period covered | From 12:01 AM on the cancellation date to the date and time the insured signs |
| Who signs | The insured (applicant's signature), with a receipt block for the producer and a witness |
What the ACORD 37 asks for
- Agency details: agency, contact, phone, fax, email, agency code and subcode, agency customer ID
- Policy details: named insured, carrier, NAIC code, policy number, and an "approved by" line
- Cancellation date: the start of the period the insured is certifying
- Date and time signed, plus the applicant's signature: the end of that period
- Receipt: amount received, producer, witness, date and time
The receipt block tells you what the form is built for. A policy lapses for non-payment, the insured pays, and the carrier needs to know nothing happened while there was no coverage before it puts the policy back in force.
When an underwriter asks for one
The most common trigger is reinstatement after cancellation. Carriers publish their own versions for exactly this. One workers' compensation carrier's form is headed "Required for reinstatement consideration" and asks the insured to confirm no losses since the cancellation date.
Signing it supports a reinstatement request. It does not decide it: whether the policy goes back in force, and from what date, is the carrier's call.
Statement of no loss vs. loss run
| Statement of no loss | Loss run | |
|---|---|---|
| Who produces it | The insured signs it | The carrier issues it |
| What it says | "I know of no losses in this period" | Every claim reported on the policy, with paid and reserved amounts |
| Typical use | Closing a gap in coverage, usually for reinstatement | Underwriting a new or renewing account |
| Interchangeable? | No. A request for one is not satisfied by the other. | |
If the underwriter wants loss runs for the years that were insured, those come from each prior carrier. See currently valued loss runs for the valuation date most submissions require.
No known loss letters
"No known loss letter", "no loss letter" and "statement of no known losses" are used for the same kind of signed certification, and carriers do not use the names consistently. One carrier calls its reinstatement form a no loss letter. Another uses a "no known or reported loss statement" signed by an executive officer of the insured, listing any exceptions. That carrier says it issues the insurance in reliance on the statement, and that a false statement can be grounds for denying a claim or rescinding the policy.
Two practical rules follow:
- If the carrier supplies its own form, use it. The wording is the carrier's, not the agency's.
- The insured signs, and only if it is true. An insured must not sign a certification that is not true. If there was a loss in the period, ask the carrier what form or process it requires instead. Exceptions belong on a form only when the carrier's own form provides a place for them.
The ACORD 37 is not the ACORD 35
The ACORD 35 is the Cancellation Request / Policy Release form: it ends coverage. The ACORD 37 deals with the gap after coverage has ended. And neither one requests loss runs. That is the ACORD 611, or for most carriers a plain request letter.
Where to get the ACORD 37
ACORD forms are copyrighted and cannot be redistributed, so we do not host a copy. Use one of:
- ACORD.org: requires an ACORD account, free for member agencies
- Your agency management system's ACORD forms library
- The carrier: many publish their own statement of no loss, and if they do, that is the one to send
Where this fits with loss runs
LossRunGuru does not read or extract statements of no loss or no known loss letters. Those are the insured's own signed documents. It is built to read the carrier loss runs for the periods that were insured. Upload a loss run PDF and the claims come back by email as a CSV, after you confirm your address. You check the values against the PDF before they go into a submission. See how it works.

Generate a Request LetterFrequently asked questions
What is a statement of no loss?
A signed statement from the insured that they are not aware of any losses, accidents or circumstances that could lead to a claim during a stated period. On the ACORD 37, that period runs from 12:01 AM on the policy's cancellation date to the date and time the insured signs.
Which ACORD form is the statement of no loss?
The ACORD 37, titled "Statement of No Loss". The current edition is 2008/01.
Is a no known loss letter the same thing as a statement of no loss?
The names overlap. Some carriers call their reinstatement form a no loss letter; others use a "no known loss" statement with their own wording, signed by an officer of the insured. If the carrier supplies its own form, use that form.
Who signs a statement of no loss?
The insured. The ACORD 37 has an applicant's signature line and a receipt block for the producer and a witness. Some carrier versions ask for an executive officer of the insured. The agency does not sign on the insured's behalf.
Does a statement of no loss replace loss runs?
No. A loss run is the carrier's record of claims on a policy. A statement of no loss is the insured's own certification about a period, usually a lapse in coverage. An underwriter who asks for one will not accept the other.
Is the ACORD 35 a statement of no loss?
No. The ACORD 35 is the Cancellation Request / Policy Release form. The statement of no loss is the ACORD 37.
For the years that were insured, there are loss runs to read.
